FOOTBLE SMELLBLE DJPoke Free Mpk's Review First impressions are important. And for a Speccy game, the very first impression is frequently the 'redefine keys' option, which is an issue here. There are 5 keys in use, including Pause, and the redefine keys menu allows you to set 1 of them. O & P are hardcoded as left & right, which is fine, but then you're left with C for Jump and X for Fire. Weird defaults by any standards, and the cause of many frustrating errors. And that's a genuine shame, as otherwise the game is pretty dandy. It's a smooth single-screen arcade-style game that focuses on a stinky old foot, which hops around, blasting out smells to neutralise invading aliens. Also weird, but in a good way this time. The uncomplicated platform levels are littered with assorted alien types, which you must clear to complete each level, and soap bubbles which are optionally collectible to pad out your score. The game is deceptively difficult. The simple kill 'em all gameplay never requires much forethought, but there are sections where the margin for error is toe-curlingly tight. A 3-life limit is rather stingey as well, adding old-school challenge. Sound is minimal in-game, but there's a terrific bouncy tune to accompany the menu screen ( on 128K machines at least ). The main foot sprite is nicely animated, hopping about with purpose, while the aliens are suitably 'orrible. To sum up: a fun first time effort from another Speccy newcomer. As an aside, it took me ages to figure out why the name is spelt like that. I wonder if AL figured it out?
