COMPILATION CITY The festive season is a time of peace, joy... and compilations. This year is no exception, and there's a plethora of collections, assemblages and gift packs attempting to seduce a punter into parting with his pounds. Julian Rignall gives his advice on which ones offer the best value for money... One version of each compilation has been judged, but since games often vary in quality from format to format, there's a full list of marks for all versions of the compilation at the end of this feature, presented as three 'league' tables: one for Spectrum, one for Amstrad and one for C64 owners, giving a clear indication about which compilations are the best on which machines. GIANTS MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: US Gold PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £12.99 Cass, C64 £14.99 Disk, Spec £17.99 Disk. VERSION TESTED: C64 CALIFORNIA GAMES: Seven whacky events from the West Coast. Superb stuff! 720: Blocky, but competent skateboarding arcade conversion. GAUNTLET II: Good, but ageing conversion of the coin-op classic. OUTRUN: A big seller, but very average in all respects. ROLLING THUNDER: Ghastly coin-op conversion. A reasonable collection with one outstanding game, and one bummer C64 Overall: 78% Amstrad Overall: 72% Spectrum Overall: 72% STATE OF THE ART MACHINE: ST SUPPLIER: Ocean PRICE: £29.99 VERSION TESTED: ST BARBARIAN: Great hack 'n' slash fighting game. CRAZY CARS: So-so race game that lacks challenge. ENDURO RACER: Poor conversion of the Sega motocross arcade game. WIZBALL: Colourful and original horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up. RAMPAGE: Great conversion, but ultimately repetitive. Fairly good value for money, with a mixture of good and bad titles. Atari ST Overall: 75% SPORTS WORLD 88 MACHINE: C64 SUPPLIER: U.S. Gold PRICE: £12.99 Cass, £14 99 Disk VERSION TESTED: C64 CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING: Novel and compelling, but the multiload is a pain. 10TH FRAME: Superb bowling game with lovely graphics and feel. HARDBALL: Great American sports game with good graphics. LEADERBOARD: Classic golf game that's been done to death. 4TH & INCHES: Simply the best American football game available. SNOOKER AND POOL: Alright if you like this sort of thing. GO FOR GOLD: Excellent six-event sports simulation. WATER POLO: Unusual, and it's playable too! A brilliant package; on absolute must for sports fans. C64 Overall: 91% FISTS 'N' THROTTLES MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Elite PRICE: £9.95 VERSION TESTED: Amstrad IKARI WARRIORS: Ageing, but extremely playable and addictive shooting game. BUGGY BOY: Excellent off-road race game. THUNDERCATS: Colourful and addictive horizontally scrolling hack 'em up. DRAGON'S LAIR: Mediocre multiload arcade game. ENDURO RACER: Another excellent off-road race game — this time with bikes. A good all-round assemblage, with only one weak link. Amstrad Overall: 82% C64 Overall: 83% Spectrum Overall: 81% GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: US Gold PRICE: £12.99 VERSION TESTED: Spec SUMMER GAMES I: Fairly good eight-event simulation marred by long multiload. SUMMER GAMES II: improvement over its predecessor, but still suffers with long loading. WINTER GAMES: The pick of the bunch with seven good events; multiload's a pain. If you can stand the multiload, it's a reasonable package, but doesn't stand up to the likes of Game, Set and Match. Spectrum Overall: 63% Amstrad Overall: 74% C64 Overall: 88% TASTE OF AMERICA MACHINES: C64 SUPPLIER: US Gold PRICE: £9.99 Cass VERSION TESTED: C64 SIDE ARMS: Laughably grotty parody of the horizontally scrolling arcade game. SOLOMON'S KEY: Very addictive and enjoyable puzzle game. WORLD CLASS LEADERBOARD: The best of the series — if you can take any more. SUPERCYCLE: Easy, but exciting motorcycle racing game. Taste of America offers three nice bites, and and a side dish that'll make you throw up. C64 Overall: 73% COMMAND PERFORMANCE MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: US Gold PRICE: Ams/Spec/C64 £12.99 Cass, C64 £14.99 Disk, SPEC £17.99 Disk, AMS £19.99 Disk VERSION TESTED: C64 MERCENARY: Classic vector graphic exploration game. HARDBALL: Great American sports game with good graphics. ARMAGEDDON MAN: Very tepid and pedestrian war game. LEVIATHAN: Uncontrollable and unaddictive three-level Zaxxon clone. BOB SLEIGH: Hum-drum simulation with some token strategy SHACKLED: Utterly dire Gauntlet clone. TRANTOR: Very average and unchallenging shoot and explore game. CHOLO: Slow, but fairly compelling vector exploration game. XENO: Rubbish future sport simulation that plays like a brick. 10TH FRAME: Superb bowling game with lovely graphics and feel. A very mixed bag. Apart from Mercenary, there's nothing really outstanding, and Xeno and Shackled plumb the depths. C64 Overall: 67% Amstrad Overall: 75% Spectrum Overall: 72% HISTORY IN THE MAKING MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: US Gold PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £24.99 Cass, C64/Ams £29.99 Disk VERSION TESTED: C64 BEACHHEAD: Four-level combat game that has aged badly. BEACHHEAD II: Superb four-part combat game with great graphics and speech. BRUCE LEE: Classic arcade adventure with a little kick and chop. IMPOSSIBLE MISSION: Arguably the best-ever C64 game. KUNG-FU MASTER: Ageing arcade conversion that offers a bit of fun. GAUNTLET: Addictive conversion of the massive coin-op. GOONIES: Very droll puzzle/action game. Dire graphics. EXPRESS RAIDER: Pretty poor Kung-Fu Master game set on a train. LEADERBOARD: The ubiquitous golf game pops up yet again. SPY HUNTER: Enjoyable, but limited vertically scrolling blaster. SUPER CYCLE: Great motorbike racing game that's just a little too easy. WORLD GAMES: Eight weird events from around the world: ranks with California Games as the best of the series. RAID OVER MOSCOW: Fun-pack shoot 'em up with very fascist overtones. ROAD RUNNER: Faithful conversion, but wrecked by an arduous multiload. INFILTRATOR: Competent arcade adventure. Very pricey, especially as most if the better games are already available on budget, or other, cheaper compilations. C64 Overall: 74% Amstrad Overall: 70% Spectrum Overall: 69% ACTION SET MACHINE: ST SUPPLIER: Gremlin Graphics PRICE: £19.99 VERSION TESTED: ST DEFLEKTOR: A rather easy puzzle game, but fun nevertheless. NORTHSTAR: Colourful and fairly addictive shoot 'em up. TRAILBLAZER: Average race game variant with a few frills. 3D GALAX: A good exercise in 3D programming, but not much of a shoot 'em up. MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: A game-of-the-film that should appeal to kids. Pretty good value, even though the games themselves aren't particularly brilliant. Atari ST Overall: 74% GAME, SET AND MATCH II MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Ocean PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £12.95 cass, £17.95 disk VERSION TESTED: Spec MATCH DAY II: The best football simulation available on the Spectrum. SUPERBOWL: Average simulation that might appeal to fans of the sport. WINTER OLYMPIAD: Six-event simulation, similar to the Games series. IAN BOTHAM'S TEST MATCH: An unexciting and bland cricket simulation. BASKET MASTER: Fairly competent game with naff graphics. TRACK AND FIELD: Jolly waggling version from a few years back. NICK FALDO'S GOLF: Good a couple of years ago, but now looking very dodgy. SUPER HANG-ON: Super indeed; a motorbike race game par excellence. STEVE DAVIS SNOOKER: Apparently the best of its kind. Who's arguing? CHAMPIONSHIP SPRINT: Super Sprint with a course designer: it's alright. Some of the games are a bit ropey, but there's plenty of variety and the whole package should keep a sports fan happy for weeks. Spectrum Overall: 82% Amstrad Overall: 81% C64 Overall: 87% TAITO COIN-OP HITS MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Imagine PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £12.99 cass VERSION TESTED: Spec RASTAN: A great exploration game with large map and plenty of enemies to hack. SLAPFIGHT: Tricky, but addictive vertically scrolling shoot 'em up. RENEGADE: Excellent conversion of the arcade beat 'em up. ARKANOID: Addictive Breakout variant. ARKANOID: REVENGE OF DOH: More of the some, and even more addictive. FLYING SHARK: Superb conversion of the arcade WW II shoot 'em up. BUBBLE BOBBLE: A totally faithful conversion of the amazing platform arcade game. LEGEND OF KAGE: The arcade game wasn't brilliant; neither is this. All excellent games apart from Legend of Kage, and even that isn't too bad. A must for an avid arcade gamesplayer. Spec Overall: 94% Amstrad Overall: 93% C64 Overall: 94% KARATE ACE MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Gremlin Graphics PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £14.99 Cass, £17.99 Disk VERSION TESTED: C64 WAY OF THE EXPLODING FIST: The grandad of computer beat 'em ups is still fun, but badly flawed. WAY OF THE TIGER: Similar to Exploding Fist, but not as good. SAMURAI TRILOGY: Exploding Fist with swords, and it's rubbish of the very highest order. BRUCE LEE: Ageing, but thoroughly enjoyable platform arcade adventure. KUNG-FU MASTER: Reasonable conversion of an old arcade game; still addictive though. AVENGER: Compelling arcade adventure-cum-beat 'em up. UCHI MATA: A noble attempt at a judo game, but it's sadly bugged. Loads of fightin' an' fumpin' on offer - although some of the games are very similar. C64 Overall: 64% Amstrad Overall: 63% Spectrum Overall: 61% TRIAD: VOLUME I MACHINES: ST/Amiga SUPPLIER: Triad PRICE: £29.99 VERSION TESTED: Amiga STARGLIDER: Thrilling vector shoot 'em up with plenty of depth. SENTINEL: Absolutely brilliant 3D arcade puzzle/strategy game. TETRIS: Unbelievably addictive arcade puzzle game. STARGLIDER: Superb 3D vector shoot 'em up with tons to do. ACE II: Fairly good one-on-one combat simulator. A varied selection of very high quality games; don't miss out on this collection of classics. Spectrum Overall: 95% Amstrad Overall: 94% C64 Overall: 90% SPACE ACE MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Gremlin Graphics PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £14.99 Cass, £17.99 DISK VERSION TESTED: C64 XEVIOUS: Very tepid version of an Atari's vertically scrolling shoot 'em up. VENOM STRIKES BACK: More MASK antics in this average arcade game. CYBERNOID: Addictive flick-screen blaster. NORTHSTAR: Run-of-the-mill trog-across-the-landscape-and-blast-the-aliens game. ZYNAPS: Challenging and compelling horizontally scrolling blaster. TRANTOR: Shoot and explore game with awful playability. EXOLON: Similar to Northstar, but marginally worse. Plenty of shooting action, but none of the games are outstanding. Still, there's hours of potential blasting in store C64 Overall: 70% Amstrad Overall: 71% Spectrum Overall: 74% FLIGHT ACE MACHINE: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Gremlin Graphics PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £14.99 Cass, £17.99 Disk VERSION TESTED: C64 AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL: All the fun of a night shift at Heathrow! SPITFIRE 40: Relive the Battle of Britain in this average simulation. STRIKEFORCE HARRIER: Fairly average simulation of the VTOL jet. TOMAHAWK: Reputedly very accurate, but rather dull in practice. ATF: Not so much a simulation; more of a mediocre 3D shoot 'em up with extra bits. ACE: Fairly good combat simulator, although it s rather old A fairly good buy for budding pilots, but not recommended to anyone else. ROLLING THUNDER: Nowhere near as good as it could have been. JINKS: Colourful, but repetitive scrolling Breakout game. LEADERBOARD: Same as the 8-bit, but with slightly improved graphics. Not a lot to shout about, None of the titles are particularly thrilling, even though the games work out quite cheap. Amiga Overall: 67% GO CRAZY MACHINES: Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Go! BAD CAT: Awful attempt at an "alternative" sports simulation, JINKS: Tedious and repetitive scrolling Breakout. SIDE ARMS: One of the worst horizontally scrolling shoot 'em ups around. DESOLATOR: Low-grade four-level Gauntlet game. BEDLAM: Boring and dull shoot 'em up that's devoid of action. And you certainly will go crazy if you buy this six-pack of turkeys. C64 Overall: 41% Amstrad Overall: 56% LEADERBOARD PAR 4 MACHINE: C64 SUPPLIER: US Gold PRICE: VERSION TESTED: C64 LEADERBOARD: The classic golf game - incredibly playable. WORLD CLASS LEADERBOARD: Even more of the same, but this time modelled on real golf courses. If you're into golfing games, this collection is an absolute must. If not, avoid it like the plague. C64 Overall: 78% KONAMI ARCADE COLLECTION MACHINES: Spec/Ams/C64 SUPPLIER: Imagine PRICE: Spec/Ams/C64 £9.99 Cass VERSION TESTED: C64 MIKIE: Very camp four-level arcade game; it's fun, though. JAILBREAK: Bileous mockery of the arcade original. Strictly for laughs. GREEN BERET: Very difficult, but additive stab 'n' roast arcade game. YIE AR KUNG-FU: Amusing beat 'em up, but it's getting a bit wrinkly. SHAO-LIN'S ROAD: Inept platform/beat 'em up. NEMESIS: Enjoyable conversion of the horizontal blaster, although it's a little long in the tooth. HYPERSPORTS: One of the original joystick wagglers, and it's still great fun. PING PONG: Playable table tennis game, with short-lived appeal. JACKAL: Grotting scrolling shoot 'em up. All the games are old, but they're all good fun; even the bad ones are good for a laugh! TARGET RENEGADE: Great graphics and playability; puts Double Dragon to shame. BARBARIAN: Gory, but very gratifying hack 'n' slash fighting game. Dominic Handy

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS Dominic Handy reviews compilations. Whether you're still looking for last-minute presents or someone's cheque is burning a hole in your pocket, you're bound to find something to light your candle in the Christmas season's spate of compilations. They come from software houses large and small, specialised and general; they range from £4.99 to £14.95; they come in all shapes and sizes, from boxes a foot long to laminated video-size boxes down to the (now) ordinary double-cassette boxes (for which we still have no racks!). You may not have anywhere to put all these different sizes, but they sure look pretty on the retailer's shelf. But some small independent retailers have great problems with the big, bold packaging of compilations, and when space is tight they usually end up at the bottom of the pile. And some compilations aren't even available in independent shops this Christmas - not because of the packaging, but because they're distributed on limited exclusive deals with high-street multiples. For instance, Gremlin Graphics' Ten Great Games is currently only available from chains like WH Smith and Menzies. It's strange the indies are treated this way when they account for 75% of all software sales... Elite gives its old hits a new lease of life on the compilation label Hit Pak. The latest compilation is The Elite Collection, a strong two-cassette assembly of well-known Elite classics. They're all very playable, ranging from the very old Bombjack and innovative Frank Bruno's Boxing to recent successes such as Paperboy and Ghosts 'N Goblins. And on the second cassette is a previously unreleased Elite game, Battleships - yes, a Spectrum version of the pencil and-paper classic. But to buy it all at £14.95 you'd have to be a dedicated Elitist. Paxman Promotions, a subsidiary of the Prism Leisure Corporation, has released two 'theme' compilations - which Paul Sumner predicted in issue 45 would be the things of the future, after the success of Ocean's Game Set And Match. At £4.99 each Paxman's Thriller Pack and Sports Pack represent good value, but sadly the games aren't that attractive. The six loosely-related games on The Thriller Pack, all previously released, are more memorable for their hype than as actual games. And The Sports Pack is a poor man's Game Set And Match. US Gold's recent compilation Summer Gold is now partnered by Solid Gold - probably the house's greatest compilation yet! Every game is very playable, and the collection covers a wide range from flight simulators like Infiltrator and Ace Of Aces to the CRASH Smashes Winter Games and Gauntle. Sadly Leaderboard didn't hit it off with the Spectrum like the others did, but it still fits in the package well. Hewson is eschewing the more-is-better theory of many compilations and putting just four Smash hits on a tape entitled exactly that. Four Smash Hits includes two of this years top shoot-'em-ups - Exolon and Zynaps - as well as Ranarama and (like Beau Jolly's Five Star Games Vol. 3) Uridium Plus. It's available on +3 disk as well as cassette. Ocean's compilations always provide value for money. In October Game Set And Match sent Spectrum sportsmen crazy, in November the shoot-'em-up collection Live Ammo arrived and now Ocean looks set to have a happy Christmas and a VERY prosperous New Year with the final 1987 release, The Magnificent 7. And guess how many games are on it... eight! If you thought Ocean's previous compilations were hot stuff, wait till The Magnificent 7 melts the snow with Ocean's greatest hits - like the mind-blowing Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Head Over Heels, arcade adventures such as The Great Escape and Short Circuit, leaders in their class like the mindless Cobra, and bat and ball with Arkanoid. And the most interesting addition is Wizball. Reviewed in CRASH issue 45 just a few months ago, it gained a Smashing 92%, and here it is already on an action-packed compilation. Ocean is backing the +3 with a disk version of The Magnificent 7. Gremlin Graphics are the ones to call if you're looking for ten great games... and Gremlins Ten Great Games compilation gets the CRASH award for Hope-Raising Packaging Of The Month! The box measures 38cm x 20cm and looks tremendous, but it holds a measly two cassettes, There's a whole range of Gremlin goodies in those two tapes, though: the attractive Monty On The Run, the gun-toting West Bank and even the original Jack The Nipper. And for those of you who prefer playing with balls they've also included Bounder, Trailblazer, Footballer Of The Year and Krakout. At just a pound per game this little (or should that be massive?) package is great value for money - and it fills the stocking up! Beau Jolly is back on the compilation wagon, and the nouveau Beau Jolly is launching a two-pronged attack on the Christmas market with two collections and a £100,000 TV ad campaign for them. The fourth in the series of 10 Computer Hits includes the Marble Madness clone Spin Dizzy and the Gauntlet clone Dandy. But pick of the bunch is either Pyracurse or Contact Sam Cruise, both CRASH Smashes. And Though Five Star Games Vol. 3 has fewer games than 10 Computer Hits, its probably the better package, it's hard to choose between such greats as Strike Force Harrier, Tau Ceti, Firelord, Aliens, The Way Of The Exploding Fist and Uridium Plus (an improved version of the issue 35 Smash). Graeme Kidd

C64/128, £9.99cs, £14.99dk Spectrum, £9.99cs Amstrad, £9.99cs, £14.99dk Not six of the best, but ten of the best games launched into the world over the last couple of years by Gremlin Graphics. Well nine then, and one from Vortex. Picky, picky... Avenger Gremlin's answer to scrolling-shooting dungeon games like Druid and Gauntlet sets an oriental hero on a quest to penetrate the lair of an evil overlord and rescue some scrolls. Inner force and endurance are depleted by the aggressive minions that try to thwart you as you kick and punch past them. A limited supply of deadly shuriken stars is available to hurl at the foe. Nothing outstandingly original here, save the moving sections of floor, but still a very playable dungeons derivative. Future Knight A slick platforms and ladders game set inside the hulk of a crashed spacecraft. The hero scurries round attempting to kill or avoid the berserk security droids as he hunts for extra weapons and keys and finally, the exit pass that gives access to the outside world. More spells have to be collected in the Great Outdoors before the imprisoned maiden (the cause of all this frantic activity) can be freed. A polished arcade adventure that should challenge a range of skills. Krakout Breakout came back into fashion this year for an as-yet-unexplained reason, and bells and whistles were added to the basic concept by a host of software houses. Gremlin weren't going to be left out and so offered up this competent variation on the theme. Playable and fun, though arguably not the best of the second breed of Breakouts, but still stands up well, particularly on a compilation. Bounder A maddeningly addictive platform game with one major difference - the player's viewpoint. Controlling a bouncing ball, you view the action from above, bouncing from one section of platform-paving to another as the vertical scroll forces the pace. Ten courses to negotiate with a bonus section at the end of each, all packed with twists and turns - like airblowers to drive you off course, impassable walls that have to be bounced around and extra-bounce paving slabs. Airborne hazards and volcanos make life that little bit more difficult. Addictive, frustrating and fun. Footballer of the Year A sort of "Football-opoly' in which your aim is to become, yes that's it, Footballer of the Year. Strategy is involved in deciding how to apply your financial resources and a spot of arcade skill comes into play when you get to shoot at the goalmouth. Gamble wisely, play well and you could end up as F... yes, we've got the picture. An interesting, and potentially very addictive game that is playable even if you aren't a football fan Trailblazer Wowee! What a race game. Dispensing with the usual souped up bike or formula racing car. you roll a ball along a chequered pathway that scrolls out of space. Gaps in the pathway must be negotiated if a time penalty is to be avoided and colour-coded sections of track speed the ball up, slow it down or confer extra jumping ability. Desperately fast and furious, quick reflexes and a good memory for the track are called for if success is to be achieved. Great fun on your own, more fun with a friend. Highway Encounter The only non-Gremlin game in this collection, chosen no doubt on account of its masterly use of 3D. An alien mothership lurks at one end of a long, dangerous highway and the means to destroy it, along with a team of five subservient droids is parked at the other end. Your aim: to push the deadly lastertron down the road and destroy the alien craft. Only one droid at a time can be used to shove the weapon, and a host of aliens lies in your path Thought as well as shooting action is involved, as some patrolling aliens need to be boxed in by shoving barrels and boxes around the road. Monty on the Run The classic follow-up to the game that launched Gremlin. The hero mole is out of clink but wishes to flee the country - to do so money and an escape kit need to be collected by leaping round the platformed environment Monty finds himself occupying. Full of sneaky twists and tortuous puzzles, the game calls for pixel-perfect positioning and a cool head. A dastardly difficult platform-based arcade adventure. West Bank Gameplay couldn't be much simpler a door opens to reveal a goodie or a baddie. Shoot the goodie and lose, shoot the baddie before he shoots you and you win. Every now and then a little character appears in an open doorway with either a bomb or bags of money on his head. Shoot the bomb and you lose, shoot the money and you win. Move left or right to pan your field of view across the doors you have to defend, press fire to shoot That's it, but the game's great fun to play Jack The Nipper An arcade adventure with a fairly traditional find and move vital object to correct location' construction but featuring the added gloss of comic characters that Leo Baxendale (deviser of the Beano's Bash Street Kids) would have been proud of. Rather than being a hero, you are cast as a tiny villain, not yet out of nappies, whose aim in life is to be as naughty as possible. Chuckle at the graphics, puzzle over the fiendish riddles and find yourself absorbed. Verdict: Essentially, 'The Best of Gremlin' - a collection of respectable games that represents excellent value and offers a wide mix of content and playing styles. A well-rounded selection that would form a good basis to a software library being started from scratch.
