THE HOUSE THAT WEPT ICreateWorlds PWYW / $2 Jamie's Review First a book*, then in 1944 a film. Fans waited 71 years before they could finally play the game! The House That Wept - based on the 1944 horror classic The Uninvited - is the latest GAC text adventure from iCreateWorlds. It's a non-linear horror adventure that lets you solve puzzles in any order while keeping the story intact. With only 21K to work with, the author still delivers something ambitious. Most space goes to the game structure, leaving just enough for graphics. These appear as framed pictures - a perfect choice for the haunted house theme. They're limited but welcome. The game's rich backstory takes inspiration from the film** (you can read more on the website). ICreateWorlds always goes the extra mile - they've even made an ebook novella based on the game. So now we have a novella of the game inspired by the film based on a book - full circle! There are also maps to help new players. If you know their other games, you'll feel at home here (no pun intended). It's smaller than some of their other titles, which I prefer - big text adventures can overwhelm me. And exploring a haunted house? Completely irresistible. About those maps: it's personal preference, but I think they spoil some fun. Half the horror is stumbling on secrets yourself. You could ignore the map... but knowing it's there is tempting. The game creates great atmosphere. I'm enjoying it - not too hard, not overwhelming. The GAC parser has quirks but works fine. The graphics, while minimal, set the mood perfectly. This is clearly a labor of love. Give it a play and experience the original haunted house story yourself. *The author's wikipedia is a fine read in itself, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy.Macardle **https://archive.org/details/the-uninvited-1944 Features a squirrel early doors, Dave.
A picture paints a thousand scares!
Some might say GAC is outdated today, but there's a cool perk - you can play it on a Cambridge Computers Z88 using Gary Lancaster's What Now? Software, which Jamie just had to try. The result is about as good as I've ever seen a Z88 look. <TO-DO - Come up with a mean joke about a low bar - Ed>
